The IBT Program is introduced in high schools in rural area for the students in classes’ 8th to 10th. It introduces students to basic theory and practices in Engineering, Energy and Environment, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, and Home and Health science. The program is spread over a three year period with the first year devoted for the Grade 8th to give an introduction to the techniques and their potential use. The second year, for Grade 9, is to carry out projects to demonstrate their use and create an asset or wealth in some form, to benefit the community/school. In the final year for Grade 10, an individual project is assigned and executed.
The main motive of this program is to sustain childrens interest in school and reduce school dropouts as much as possible.
IBT model, the first ever of its kind, is introduced in the state of Karnataka at two schools. The Sri Someshwara High School at Dombaranahalli in Tumkur District and The Govt Composite High School at Rajanahalli in Kolar District. The IBT program has been very successful and has drawn a wide attention. The program is currently into its third year (2009-2010) and has been a huge success since its inception (2007-08). The community’s acceptance to the program and students’ participation has been remarkable.
